Diane, I have also heard that the birth control pill, when taken on a normal basis, does just that as well....prevents implantation of a fertilized egg, which is, in fact, an
abortion.
Not all the time, mind you, but it is occassionally
possible if an egg happens to get through.
The pill simply does not allow a woman's uterus to prepare for implantation at any time. That is why it has such a high "success" rate. Even if an egg does slip through the cracks (so to speak

) and becomes fertilized, it really has no chance of implantation. That's pretty sad.
They don't tell you any of this at the doctor's office when you're discussing birth control options.
I would be willing to bet that if they made this public knowledge and mandatory knowledge before prescribing the pill, there would be far less "pill-takers".
I've researched it somewhat, and there really are no "good" options for birth control other than Natural Family Planning....which works great if you can be diligent enough to follow it exactly, but I got careless and sure enough...along came my little angel 9 months later.
