Romney 1968/Romney 2012

...1968: George Romney; successful businessman turned Governor was leading the GOP field over controversial Richard Nixon, a former Vice President whose political career had been in limbo since losing the '62 California Governor's race to Pat Brown.

Romney; handsome, well-funded and well spoken held a solid lead going into New Hampshire until he told a reporter he'd been "brainwashed" on the issue of Viet Nam. Nixon quickly took the lead and cruised to the nomination and ultimately to the Presidency.

2012: Mitt Romney: successful businessman turned Governor was leading the GOP field over controversial Newt Gingrich, a former Speaker of the House whose political career had been in limbo since surrendering the speakership in 1998 in the wake of the Clinton impeachment. It was felt Clinton had bested Gingrich both tactically and politically.

Strange how history could be repeating itself. None of us know how this will play out, but the resemblance is striking.

Interesting - this made me read up on the bio of the Romneys a bit - and it's impressing indeed...

BTW: remembering the Clinton years via my own recollection - the Clintons "bested" lots of folks...

...addendum.

Could it be that a former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator, defeated in his own home state six years ago will assume the role of Nixon rather than Gingrich ?

When I posted this last November, who'da thunk the "invisible' Rick Santorum would become a player ?

I think this is gonna get more and more interesting.
