As much as I support our military, can we honestly say that the military is still a totally honorable organization when we have let it come to this?

Remember, not everyone in the military is like that. The Pentagon has to do what the high brass tells them, themselves appointed by which ever president sits in the Oval Office at the time. One example being william cohen, who was appointed by bill clinton, taking the Ranger's Black Beret and making it a piece of the standard Army Uniform.
