We are the only free nation in the world that spends more than 17% of our GDP annually to cover less than 85% of our citizenry. That western European and Canadian health care systems are significantly more cost effective than our own is fact, not opinion.

Whenever I point this out to right wingers, they always counter by creating dramatic tales, supported only by whimsy anecdotal evidence, about the terrible quality and life threatening wait lines of the Canadian health care system. They say that quality is more important than quantity, Canada's health care may be cheaper but it is inefficient, blah blah blah.

But, after refusing to provide statistical data to back up their assertions, they inevitably backpeddle...into claiming that Universal Healthcare is costly! And then I point out, again, that this isn't so, and then they obliviously turn the argument full circle.

Yes, actually. Because, contrary to what your comedic statement seems to imply you think, a tooth infected to the point of needing removal is hardly a trivial matter.




I know you don't mean to convey this, but what your argument gets to is "I don't want my taxpayer dollars to go to performing open heart surgery on poor children! They're poor! Me to children: 'too bad you weren't born in a rich family, suckas!' "

You wish for America to be a land of equal opportunity, where everyone can achieve success through hard work. How does this work, if one can be forced to file for bankruptcy because he had a freak accident and cannot pay for it? Oops, there goes the college savings you spent a decade saving up. That's the Conservative Utopia to you.





That's the ethical argument. The economic argument I already outlined: universal healthcare is significantly more cost effective.
