Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan and the Collapse of Communism Examined by Reagan's National Security Advisor

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The convergence of the historic roles played by Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan in the collapse of Communism will be assessed by former Reagan administration national security advisor Richard V. Allen in a talk at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center on November 14, 2004 at 7 p.m. ADVERTISEMENT

The address, "Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan and The Collapse of Communism: An Historic Confluence" is free and open to the public.

This is the first time Allen is publicly addressing the issue since Reagan's death.

Pope John Paul II's historic trip to his homeland in 1979, which Polish Premier General Wojciech Jaruzelski called the "detonator," changed the spirit and determination of the Poles.

The Pope's many speeches during the 9-day visit and his subsequent trips there eventually led to the success of the Solidarity Movement and the demise of Communism in Poland.

Gorbachev later stated that what happened in Eastern Europe "would not have been possible without the presence of this Pope."

Prior to becoming national security advisor, Allen served as Reagan's chief foreign policy adviser.

He was also a policy coordinator in the Nixon administration.

He is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the United States Defense Policy Board, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Heritage Foundation.
