Icon at helm
U.S. president has backing of Americans in war on Iraq
By PETER WORTHINGTON -- Toronto Sun
George W. Bush is on a roll, like no president before him: Not Roosevelt, not Eisenhower, not Kennedy, not even Ronald Reagan.

The UN Security Council's unanimous (15-0) vote to require Iraq to disarm and give weapons inspectors free rein, is a huge personal victory for President Bush. It may also be the beginning of the end for Saddam Hussein.

Of course, The Republicans' unprecedented triumph in the U.S. mid-term elections, confounding the predictions (and hopes) of faint-hearts and rudderless Democrats, may have contributed to the UN's Iraq resolution.

It's been clear for months, reiterated repeatedly by Bush, that regardless of how the UN votes, America is prepared to act alone if necessary to bring Saddam to heel.

Had the Security Council vacillated or hesitated, it would have looked weak and hesitant when faced with tyranny, its influence perhaps irrevocably undermined.

In order to save face and what waning influence it has, UN members toed the line and said "me too." The UN endorsement gives solace to sob-sister countries like Canada, which goes to any length to avoid a decision and make a stand on principle.

Rare risk

Since putting his body on the line and campaigning in the mid-term elections -- rare for a sitting president to risk, since defeat would weaken his influence -- Bush has acquired icon status and new respect.

He's irrefutably popular among Americans, and also has their trust. These are two different qualities. (Bill Clinton was liked, but no one trusted him). America is ready to support him in war with Saddam.

And war will likely be necessary. If Saddam rejects any of the terms of the UN resolution, Bush can attack with the full sanction of the UN. Supposedly, Saddam has seven days to respond to the resolutions. Even if he agrees, and if weapons inspectors (who may leave immediately) get the slightest brush-off, the Americans can act.

Critics bellyache that Bush is fixated on war with Iraq. True -- but untrue. Bush sees Saddam Hussein for what he is, and wants him gone. So should we all. If the Iraqis were to dump Saddam, there'd be no need for war.

What makes Bush so special, as it made Reagan special, is that he's decisive (rare among all politicians), has conviction, and talks straight.

He's no orator, but more than any president, perhaps with the exception of Reagan, Bush talks to people. No high-flown rhetoric, few grandiloquent phrases -- he talks the language of individual Americans and

talks so clearly that it's impossible not to get his meaning.

He's a greater persuader than even Reagan -- more plain talk and no bafflegab.

Our own prime minister is decisive -- but only when his interests are at stake. Chretien is "decisive" about not helping the military; he "decisively" rejected modern helicopters 10 years ago, and "decisively" bought Challenger jets for himself. He "decisively" reneged on ending the GST as he promised when first elected, and against all evidence he "decisively" thinks Canada's immigration and border polices are secure.

Small wonder there's no empathy with George Bush -- and vice-versa.

Radiates honesty

Bush can still fail, but the way he liaises with the American people, it's unlikely. He radiates honesty, and since the mid-term elections he is viewed by nay-sayers in the Washington press corps with something akin to awe.

There's a similar reaction under way within the UN.

The U.S. president is always the world's most powerful man, but other leaders, like the dictatorial Chretien, have more individual powers. Today, Bush has even more power because the American people are so clearly with him, that even the UN dare not challenge him. Goodbye Saddam ...

Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightening
of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires
of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar
in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence
by the dim and flaring lamps
His day is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel
writ in burnish`d rows of steel,
"As ye deal with my contemners,
So with you my grace shall deal;"
Let the Hero, born of woman,
crush the serpent with his heel
Since God is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet
that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men
before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him!
be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies
Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom
that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy,
let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.
