New Research Challenges Performance and Cost Perceptions Surrounding Linux in Mainframes and Application Development

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDITORS' UPDATE, Oct. 22, 2003 -- A correction has been made to Martin Taylor's response to the seventh question below, regarding study findings that Microsoft Windows Server 2003 outperformed Linux mainframes on standard file-sharing and Web serving benchmarks by 20 to 300 percent.

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 15, 2003 -- Now more than ever, businesses are looking for substantive data to help them quantify IT costs and determine the overall value of their IT investments in an effort to watch their bottom line. This concern has raised questions about software alternatives to Microsoft. To help address customers' questions about performance and cost when comparing Microsoft products to Linux-based offerings, and to give them third-party comparative data, Microsoft commissioned two new pieces of research.

Microsoft has been engaged in some suspicious anti-Linux activities as of late. For starters, there's questions as to where SCO (who holds the patents on UNIX, not Linux) is getting the funding for their legal battles with Novell and others. They're throwing out this bull-caca story that all Linux owners owe them around $700 or so per processor, and they've tried to revoke IBM's UNIX license for AIX. IBM has said, "bring it on."

There's a large news archve at http://www.linux.org that covers it pretty well.

Bottom line, Linux is extremely cost effective. Even IBM is pushing it.

Well the SCO funding issue isnt suspect to me at all. As most of you know I worked for a division of IBM that built the E-Server and X-Series.

If you look, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft are in a join venture. Sun is also dealing with SCO.
They are getting thier funding thru Sun from microsoft.

And it is all BS. If you look at the article you will see some key notes :Microsoft commissioned two new pieces of research.
Microsoft asked Giga Research
Microsoft also commissioned an independent third-party performance benchmark, audited by Meta Group, to compare server consolidation using Microsoft Windows Server 2003 versus a Linux-based IBM mainframe. (See links to both studies at right.)

This is a no brainer .... Microsoft funded studys ... of course they will come out on top

Dude, Baystar invested $10 million in SCO for this brou-haha. Baystar has some questionable ties to Microsoft...

SCO Group, the company embroiled in legal action around Linux and Unix, announced a $50 million investment by BayStar Capital on Thursday, marking a reversal of plans it discussed in May.
SCO will use the funding primarily to boost its software development efforts and secondarily to help pay legal and licensing costs, spokesman Blake Stowell said. SCO sells the Unix operating system and licenses it to others, but more controversially, it has sued IBM over Big Blue's treatment of Unix and argues that companies should pay SCO to use Linux.
