Question

I set up a wireless home network. I am using a Linksys USB Network Adapter ver.2.6 . The router is about 50 feet away from one PC and about 80 feet from another. The PC that is 50 feet away gets an excellent signal 11 mbps, but the one that is 80 feet away gets a low to good signal 2-2.5 mbps. and keeps getting knocked off.
Does anyone have any suggestions besides rearranging my furniture to bring the router closer to the adapter? The signal should work up to 120 feet according to the manyfacturer.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Melissa, here is a couple of tips for router placement.

1) Higher is better than lower

2) On top (of a cabinet, bookshelf, desk hutch) is better than inside

3) Away from large metal objects (filing cabinets, steel shelving, etc.) is better than near

You may also look into a signal booster. If you have a lInksys router they make a signal booster for it.

Signal booster

THis and other ideas can be found here
Ways to improve wireless performance

A few sections contain some very high tech stuff but some of it may help you. I think the signal booster is the way to go however. Factors such as what type of lighting, electronics nearby and type of wall construction (brick versus wood) all affect range and performance.

Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks so much Cosmo. I was thinking of buying a booster in Circuit City yesterday, but instead I cought a corded phone thinking that perhaps the fact I had a cordless in the room was effecting my signal. Do you happen to know if they make longer router cables? Perhaps I'd be able to move it if they do. Right now there is not enough give for me to do much with it.

By router cables do you mean the cable from the router to the pc? Those can be up to 300 feet without to much of a problem. You should be able to find ones pre made up to 200' but you may have to get them online or at a computer shop. Places like Circuit City rarely have any made over 100'. The cordless phone should be ok as its a different frequency than the wireless network. Things like florescent lighting affect the range way more than that would. If you can't find your cable locally try a mail order place like CDW online. If you strike out there I could build what size you need for cost. Just let me know.

Thanks again Cosmo, you've been a great help. I will try going the longer cable route! A blessed Christmas to you and yours.
