VA-VA-VRROOM! Volvo's experimental Your Concept Car is the result of the automaker's $3.5 million project to create a car designed by women, for women.
March 7, 2004 -- It fits as well as a well-tailored dress.
It's designed to be flattering and not get dirty.
And it won't mess up your hair. It's the first car built by women for women. It's Volvo's Your Concept Car, or YCC, and it's about to cut a striking silhouette on the road.
A year ago, the Swedish automaker gave its female employees a special $3.5 million project - design the car they would like to drive.
The result is a roomy, 215-horsepower cross between a coupe and an SUV that's easy to park, maintain and keep clean.
The car, unveiled at the Geneva auto show last week, has a low-emission, gas-electric hybrid engine.
"You get the power, and you're environmentally OK at the same time," said Tatiana Butovitsch, one of the five design-team members.
The designers believe that comfort for female drivers is an area ignored by male car designers.
So they developed a body-scanning system that enables the car to adjust seats, mirrors, pedals and the steering wheel to a woman's physique.
The center console is free of a gear shift to make room for a handbag
