In the 1930’s a French Student named Louis Bachelier tried to tackle this problem in his doctoral thesis. He created the first complete mathematical model of stock market fluctuations with an obscure financial contract called an option. He made the first attempt to figure out how to price them. His work went unnoticed and he faded away like many other french people in the economics genre.
