Do away with hunters safety?
I have heard that Mi. dnr wants to do away with its hunters safety program as a means to attract more youth to the outdoors(hunting)(which in turns brings in more license sales). They feel more people would hunt if they didn't have to take the safety course, and they feel that accidental shootings would not rise because of this.I disagree,I think Mi. owes it's safe hunting record due to the fact of mi. hunters safety classes,I took the class many years ago(even though I didn't have to)and my son took the class last year.I do believe that some parents are responsible enough to teach their kids themselves, but not enough are responsible,I just hear to many stories (from the horses mouth) how they rattled off one uncontrolled shot after another trying to hit a running deer.(even though they spend no time at the range practicing that shot)I don't necessarily have the answer for the dnr's woes(except maybe hunting license increases, not popular)but I don't think the answer is to allow kids who may never hear a sentence geared towards gun safety or hunting ethics out in the woods with a weapon. What do you think?

Hunter Safety is greta for Nebie Hunters, wish I had hunter safety as I entered the sport of hunting since I probably screwed-up to a level almost killing someone.
I think hunter safety should be enforced before taking to the outdoors with a weapon.

Having taken the Hunter Safety Course in Michigan, I would say that it helped me some...
What was really important was having a father that had a healthy respect for guns, who took me out and showed me how it was done and not done.
5 years of sitting in the cold snow freezing my backside off in those Manton Michigan winters while deer hunting with dad, mom, grandparents, Uncles, Cousins, etc. did a better job than just the DNR class.
I don't want Doodlehead, son or daughter of flaming liberal anti-gun owning dufushead, to hit the woods without at LEAST getting the DNR training, cause I know they aren't getting any education at home that is worth a damn.
Ahhh...but then again, I guess I understand this....Jennifer is doing LOUSY in the polls and she needs to funnel more money to the idiot running Detroit...why not take it out of hunting....after all, she's a liberal, she probably hates hunters and hunting....except for that liscensing cash....

To tell you the truth I don't think it is Granholm behind this,I think it is the DNR and one of thier marketing plans, they believe that hunters safety is a brick wall to some people, that it is stopping others from getting into hunting because of the mandatory safety class,I say tuff $%#%^ its part of learning and has made hunting a safe endevour. Now whether Granholm supports it or not is another question, and to tell you the truth I am not sure how she stands. And I notice you hunt up in Manton thats over towards the mid to upper west side isn't it? I do all my Hunting on the east side of the state (known as the sunrise side)in Hale Mi. its between Tawas and West Branch.

I spent some time in Tawas back when I was a little tyke...but since I had to ride with Dad to get to the hunting area, it was in Manton....US131...some park up there...anyways...I occasionally miss it...but I miss the time with my dad more than anything...
Having grown up in Livonia....I had enough of the "East" side of Michigan....yipes...don't miss that at all...except that I could be in Canada in 20 minutes.

Update
A person who does not have a hunter safety certificate(which you must have if born on or after jan.1 1960)may purchase an "apprentice hunting" license. An apprentice hunter may purchase this license for 2 license years before he/she must succesfully complete a hunter safety course. The apprentice hunting license is available to residents and non-residents.Apprentice hunter under the age of 17,when afield, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or someone 21 or older designated by thier parent or guardian. The parent/guardian/person who is 21 or older must possess a valid hunting license to hunt the same game as the apprentice hunter.'Accompanied by" requires the adult to be able to come to the immediate aid of the other person and staying within a distance from the other person that permits uninterupted, unaided visual and verbal contact.
A PERSON CANNOT ACCOMPANY NO MORE THAN 2 HUNTERS AT ONE TIME.
They also lowered the minnimum age from12 to 10 under much of the same rules, you can also rifle deer hunt now at the age of 12(it use to be 14) but it must be on private property and accompanied with someone 21 years old or older on private property.
I can go along with this.

Well, tell me what you think of this:
Quote:
AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas lawmaker is aiming to allow the blind to hunt. Texas State Representative Edmund Kuempel has introduced a measure that would allow blind people to hunt any game that sighted people can currently pursue.
He hopes it will be passed after the legislature reconvenes in January though he does not expect it to come into affect until 2008.
"This opens up the fun of hunting to additional people, and I think that's great," Kuempel told Reuters.
The bill may find little resistance in Texas, where politicians of all stripes endorse hunting, which is wildly popular in the state.

Blind Hunters
I'm for it,I think it is great thata person with a disability like blindness can still go out and do something that they have done for years but had to stop hunting because for whatever reason they lost thier vision. In Michigan the D.N.R. allows a blind person the use of a laser on thier weapon, while a licensed person who is 18 yrs or older lines the shot up for them.
