Today I'm driving through a new housing development and I see this brown haired boy about 8 years old playing in the dirt. Total Norman Rockwell scene. Then I see what he's doing. He's got a magnifying glass on a bug. Science lesson or animal cruelty. (I suddenly started feeling sorry for an ant I never met. Should I chain my self to the ant or make a sign and protest? lol)
It reminded me of all the dumb stuff I did in the name of science. Electricity was a favorite. I also experimented with magic by making all my dad's tools disappear.
Once I put a can of coke in the freezer to see if it really would blow up. Figured if it did I would clean the freezer. Of course it took so long I forgot about it until mom reminded me when she found a freezer full of frozen coke.
Just trying to lighten things up a little.

Oh, if I had a penny for all the foolish things I have done..and some of them are still happening all these years later.
But I never, ever magnified an ant or a bug. Too yucky. To this day, I'd rather see a mouse run over my foot than any type of insect.

I agree with Hane....I would happily pick up snakes thicker around than my own arm, but cockroaches and large spiders reduce me to a screaming little girl. I don't mind fireflies, butterflies, or dragonflies....that's about it in the bug department. Maybe grasshoppers, too.

The other evening, there was a spider the size of a sparrow in my living room (Okay, I am exaggerating - a little) I screamed and ran into the pantry to get something to try to scoop it up with. I managed to get it onto the bristles of a broom and flicked it outside.
If it shows up again - it's toast.

When I was a kid I would get my sling shot and a ball of mud. In the house I was through. Ever notice if you try to get them they actually look at you like they are thinking "come closer I'll jump on you"

There was a HUGE wolf spider seeking shelter in my garage after a storm last week....I SCREAMED and a neighbor came over to take care of it for me (probably thinking I'm a silly little Yankee city girl! )....she took one look at it and screamed for her husband! It hid behind boxes and we never found it...just going into the garage gives me a yucky, crawly feeling.

I would have gotten a hammer and smashed it.
I've gotten to accept that when little spiders land on me they WILL bite me. It has happened 100% of the time. Every time I see a spider in the house, (except Daddy Long-Legs) I kill it with any means necessary. I don't mind spiders, just not in my house.
I did the ant+magnifying glass for a while. One time I even coaxed it into a regular fire, of which burned a permanent black spot on the concrete in my childhood home.
Ah yes, those were the days.

I finally built up a tolerance for spiders until 2-years ago when something bit me on my leg at work. It was an intense firey pain and was bright red, the pain was like nothing I had ever experienced before and it just wouldn't stop. I put some antiobiotic ointment on it when I got home from work, but by dinner time it was so painful I couldn't think of anything but that.
I talked to a girlfriend who is a retired RN, she came right over with her medicine pouch. One look and she said "Brown Recluse Spider and they are mean and dangerous".
To make a long story short, she soaked a cotton ball in Collodial Silver and sprinkled Activated Charcoal on it and applied it to the ever enlarging red spot and taped it in place. Providing instructions to keep it moist with the Activated Charcoal to draw the poison out.
All in all, it took three months for the mess to clean up, tissue dissolved and slowly rebuilt. But I was lucky, a carpenter in town was bit by one of those monsters and lost a large hunk of his leg by surgery to cut out the damage.
I have a very healthy respect for creepy things. I know they are a necessary part of the cycle of life, I just don't want to be around them.

Bugs do fascinate me.
My favorite two insects:
Green Lyssomanes
and the
Click Beetle
I won't have anything to do with roaches or any variety of parasite that prefers human hosts. There is a short list of insects that give me the squirms, and this guy is high on that list:
Wheel Bug
