Di and I were walking close by the hospital when we saw flyers. We had to look it up online.....

With the economy in shambles and with wars and occupations continuing, the challenge to change these conditions confronts us all. More than a year ago, millions placed their hopes in Barack Obama and the Democrats to solve these problems. But after months of broken promises and concessions to conservatives, jobs are scarce, health care reform is on life support, and full equality for LGBT people remains elusive.

Socialism 2010—to be held in both Chicago and Oakland—will provide an unparalleled opportunity for new and veteran activists and scholars to explore questions about how we got into this mess and how we can get out of it.

Gee I wonder why??? Wish those of us conservatives could "crash the party"

Right, because the "enlightened ones" like Lenin were somehow able to build such a society. Oh wait, that didn't quite work out, did it?

And why do socialists keep referring to capitalism as "oppression"? The job that I take is not forced upon me with a gun, it is something that I have consented to do. This is different from slavery, what was a very old by-product of the old feudal systems that was abolished either by law or by capitalism when the developing country can actually give people economic mobility instead of sticking the same families in the same caste system for centuries. Sure, there are some things you have to do, such as make money to feed yourself, but until we get to the Star Trek fantasy where consumer goods come out of a hole in the wall and all laws of scarcity are somehow made useless (impossible), then you'll have to get off your lazy butt and work.

The other problem with socialism relates to what's known as the economic calculation problem. In a capitalistic society, we have prices, which allows us to easily determine the set value of a good. Of course, this is only accurate as how free the market is. The more restrictions and distortions that are placed (subsidies, taxes, regulations, etc.), the more inaccurate they are. So in a socialist economy where economic events are either planned or heavily managed, a price means nothing because it isn't determined by the market. It's determined by a bureaucrat, by somebody on the outside. It doesn't matter if that person is a college intern or is Steven Hawking, they simply will not have all of the information at their disposal to make a good decision. So it fails on the basis of false prices and bad decisions.

Unfortunately, these folks don't think in a logical manner. They will continue to believe that by encompassing feel-good feelings and blaming capitalism for everything will somehow correct for these things. As I've said before, the best thing a society can give is the power of the individual, not the tyranny of the collective. I seriously wonder if any of these people think North Korea is a good model to follow.

Quite right, it's amazing that these people can be so blind and so stupid! History has show over and over that socialism kills the goose, but these idiots want to keep to doing same thing over and over and expect different results - that IS insane!

Only the Progressive Socialists Liberals wouldn't get it, that they and their system are the problems. You can not slap enough D'oh! out of these Socialists.

I suggest we apply their own method, used effectively in Socialist/Commie countries for getting us out of the mess they created.
