President Bush proposed a new law Monday that would give him the power to control spending by vetoing specific items in spending bills _ authority that the Supreme Court struck down nine years ago but which would be structured differently under Bush's plan.
"Forty-three governors have this line-item veto in their states," Bush said. "Now it's time to bring this important tool of fiscal discipline to Washington, D.C."

I'm all for the line item veto...I think that it's the only way to overcome porkbarrel spending.

If only the Democrats won't oppose it.

Supposedly if this came back, it would be a big part of Bush's legacy. If he would control spending, he could possibly overcome even Reagan on one thing: getting Congress to become fiscally disciplined. I just hope that he does it. Sheesh, some call Conservatism traditionalist, but as far as I know either Congress or the Executive Branch has a traditionalist thing in which either one or the other, or both, spend too much going very far back. It is time to hack the legs of economic slavery, which means all of those useless programs our government has. With Tax Cuts and responsible spending we can live again.

...well-he'd better get his Republicans "in line" on this if he wants to get it passed.
If he doesn't get engaged at home, and learns how to crack heads in Washington, it may not matter how many he cracks in Iraq; particularly if things don't go well in November...

True. The Republicans have waited many years, there was Reagan and Gingrich yet because many politicians are moderates, and possibly sympathies for the Democrats, it is difficult to do. I also really hope that this year President Bush repeals the Death Tax. At least Eminent Domain's power would be slightly reduced.

Is it an issue where you can use Bill Clinton as an example to win democrats over, due to offering something similar in his time, or is this a "Bush wants it so I hate it" thing with those guys?

I actually think that the Illegal Immigration plan that President Bush has is him trying to do a Welfare Reform of the Right. I agree with his plan, at least mostly, but I know that a great amount of very Conservative people oppose it.

Also, remember how there were notes about Clinton being the first one to suggest partial privatization in Social Security? Remember how the Democrats acted when President Bush tried to do it.
