A Democratic group crucial to John Kerry (news - web sites)'s presidential campaign has paid felons — some convicted of sex offenses, assault and burglary — to conduct door-to-door voter registration drives in at least three election swing states.

America Coming Together, contending that convicted criminals deserve a second chance in society, employs felons as voter canvassers in major metropolitan areas in Missouri, Florida, Ohio and perhaps in other states among the 17 it is targeting in its drive. Some of the felons lived in halfway houses, and at least four returned to prison.

ACT canvassers ask residents which issues are important to them and, if they are not registered, sign them up as voters. They gather telephone numbers and other personal information, such as driver's license numbers or partial Social Security (news - web sites) numbers, depending on what a state requires for voter registration.

During our recall election of Governor Lowbeam last year (here in California), the Recall people also hired people to collect signatures for the recall.

I do not believe this is illegal, although the DemocRATS made a big deal about it. As a matter of fact, they filed a lawsuit in Federal Court seeking to have all of the ballots thrown out because some of the hirees were not registered to vote in California. The Federal Court threw out the lawsuit.

Now, the DemocRATS are doing the same thing which mirrors their lawsuit...

Concur. This in of itself isn't, well, "really bad." I can take this in stride as civil service to society and leave it at that. If nothing else, its good that somebody is hiring these people, even if its to serve the Dark Side! Employment is probably the best medicine anyway.

In this case, the liability is all on the Democrat side in who they've picked to represent them door-to-door. I say let them hire felons! Can you imagine the headlines?

The Democrats have announced that they will immediately cease the use of convicted felons, rapists and pedophiles in conducting voter registrations.

I wonder why there is no "common sense" in the Democrat Party, which would not have allowed this type of despicable conduct in the first place?

Aren't we Republicans supposed to be stupid and the Democrats are supposed to be highly intelligent, according to their anaylsis?

America Coming Together announced a new policy for background checks after The Associated Press reported Wednesday that ACT had used people convicted of burglary, assault and sex offenses to canvass neighborhoods in at least three election swing states -- Missouri, Florida and Ohio. It declined to define what it considers violent or serious offenses under the new policy.
