Keep in mind, however, that some politicians and even pundits break ranks. They'll either side with the left on some issues or even attack the right altogether.

Newt Gingrich has done it occasionally, McCain does it frequently, and now this guy has gone so far as to write a book with it.

This is normally done on their part to boost their credibility and attempt to break from the 'hardliner' label.

That is my guess. Perhaps he wants the fame and popularity of being a 'moderate' like McCain has. It is sad if their values are sold this cheap however.
These are people with no spine. I liked him as a hardliner.

Breaking ranks is one thing, but those quotes above have absolutly no basis whatsoever in the real world.

Wouldn't it be great if the real world was just like Mary Poppins?

They don't need to, you just have to consider the target audience.

There was a story on Ananova about a Chinese man that parachuted out of his apartment with his umbrella after watching that movie. He broke both his legs.

I have a scar on my head from the coffee table. I then became a Jimmy Carter fan. Upon recovery from my head injury Reagan ran.

Here is another reason one should stay firmly in touch with reality and only touch the hootch in moderation:
